Scott Pilgrim VS Mirvish Village
Mirvish Village was hopping last night as hundreds of nerds crowded Markham street for the midnight release of the latest, and final, Scott Pilgrim book. Scott Pilgrim is a series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley. An international hit, the series is set in Toronto; holding a special place in the hearts of Torontonians. I suppose that there is something quite magical about celebrating a narrative that is not only highly entertaining for yourself, but also takes place in your backyard; allowing you to discover – and in the case of last night’s party – interact, with your community in a new way. I often say that Toronto suffers from small world syndrome, and last night’s street party certainly validated that belief. I bumped into friends old and new, and some who previously only existed online. Needless to say, a Toronto based comic laden with heavy video game references attracts a high quality geek – you know, the kind of geek I tend to hang out with.
Last night’s festivities included an outdoor costume contest, an arcade hosted by The Hand Eye Society (featuring a number of local indie games and game designers), and an autograph signing by O’Malley. The books were distributed at midnight, cracked open and devoured by die-hard fans about two minutes later. Although I have yet to read a Scott Pilgrim book, I must admit that last night’s gathering (as well as the stellar trailer for the upcoming movie) has convinced me to pick up a copy of Scott Pilgrim volume 1; I hope the book club doesn’t mind.
