Beware The Online Filter Bubble

June 21, 2011

I was recently directed towards this Ted Talk: Beware The Online Filter Bubbles by Eli Pariser.

In this discussion, Pariser identifies some of the problems with online companies tailoring content to individual users. What I find particularly interesting about this discussion is the evolution of the internet from a place of endless opinions and information, to a place where exploration can in fact become isolating.

While I’m concerned that Pariser makes a large assumption about users (as passive and not responsible for their own critical engagement) his filter-bubble argument is not only timely and plausible but also somewhat unnerving (when one considers the Orwellian nature of it all).
