Nosaj Thing is an electronic hip-hop artist / producer from Los Angeles. I’ve had the opportunity to see him perform live a couple of times. Last night, I saw Nosaj Thing play at the Drake Underground. Being Easter Sunday, the crowd was much smaller, and the show was more intimate than one he played at Wrongbar this past February. It was a great set and really solidified my belief that Nosaj Thing is a master of his art – whether it be remixing or creating original songs. However, the best part of seeing Nosaj Thing in such an intimate venue, was recognizing the sheer amount of energy he brings to his performance. As terrific as the tracks below are, they simply don’t do him justice. It’s not until you see Nosaj Thing perform live that you really see these songs come to life. Comment Adidas Originals – Star Wars CollectionI don’t like Star Wars but I like this commercial for five reasons: Cool kicks, Daft Punk, Imperial March remix, Snoop Dogg, and overall hip-nerdiness. Also, how rad would it be to see Darth Vader face off against Daft Punk? It could be an incredibly awesome robot-dance-off. Comment Music Monday 122109
(I’m currently on a road trip, so this post is actually going up on a Sunday night – but I’m sure you’ll forgive me) Since moving to Toronto I’ve had the opportunity to see quite a few live shows and I’ve been pretty lucky with the amount of talent that comes through this city. Though, perhaps the most interesting shows I’ve been to in the past 8 months, have been the ones I’ve gone to without much prior knowledge about the performing artists. I’ve head out to a couple dubstep or grime concerts while completely oblivious of what to expect. Fortunately, I’ve enjoyed these random shows, and am slowly growing to appreciate the bass-heavy music discovered in the small, sweaty venues. So without further ado, I thought I’d pass on some dubstep remixes – ironically enough, none of which have been produced by any of the dj’s/producers/artists I’ve seen live. It’s almost as if that entire intro was completely useless. Pony (Boson Dubstep Remix) – Ginuwine Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. And to be honest, I’m usually opposed to covers or remixes of Radiohead songs as they usually butcher the originals. Fortunately, Videotape received great treatment on this remix and I absolutely love it. Dirty Rich Beautiful (DJ Gameplay Remix) – Lady Gaga You gotta love it when the remix samples nothing but a few choice lyrics. Comment La Roux VS The GossipI do love me some mashups. I also love me some random suggestions. Thanks to Jaime for this one. Comment Music Monday 102609
The Mashup – A way for bedroom dj’s to enjoy a brief moment in the spotlight through a cut and paste method of remixing. Simply put, a mashup is the blending of two songs to form a new one. This doesn’t always go well, often awkwardly smushing together songs to be left with a lame mashup that makes you say ‘just because you can, doesn’t mean you should’. But when done right, the mashup can be clever, fun, and just as enjoyable as the originals. Knocked Up – Lykke Li vs Kings of Leon Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser. In my opinion, this is an example of a mashup done right as it is often mistaken as a duet, and on it’s own, it’s just an amazing song. Party and Bullshit – Miley Cyrus vs Biggie Smalls Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser. This Saturday, Christine and I couldn’t believe our ears when we heard Biggie Smalls being mashed with Miley Cyrus – perhaps a rap devotee would call this blasphemous – but for a couple of girls out on Saturday night with a love/hate relationship with Miley, it was pure genius. Justify My Thug – Jay Z vs The Beatles Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. Its only available as a bootleg, due to copyright infringement, but it stands as probably one of the most clever mashups. Justify My Thug is by far my favourite on this album. Comment |
